CVS Health announced Friday that it will lay off 164 remote employees assigned to Aetna’s headquarters in Hartford, Connecticut, as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures. The job cuts will begin on February 15, impacting workers in multiple states.

In a December 20 letter to the Connecticut Department of Labor, CVS Health attributed the layoffs to “an unexpected loss of contract in Kansas” and additional staff reductions to manage expenses. The affected positions include 28 case management analysts, 11 registered nurse case managers, and approximately 35 employees with the title of “community lead generator” analysts.

The layoffs are part of a broader effort by CVS Health to reduce expenses by $2 billion amid financial struggles in the health insurance sector. Since August 2023, Aetna has eliminated a total of 1,212 jobs as the company works to stabilize its operations.

This latest round of cuts follows an announcement made one month ago, when CVS Health announced the elimination of 43 jobs in Hartford, affecting both remote and in-office employees.

CVS Health has not disclosed whether additional layoffs are planned, but the company continues to evaluate its workforce as it navigates financial challenges in the healthcare industry.

The affected employees, despite being remote workers, were officially assigned to Aetna’s headquarters at 151 Farmington Ave. in Hartford. Their terminations underscore the broader restructuring efforts within CVS Health’s insurance division.

State officials are monitoring the situation closely and are expected to engage with company leadership to address workforce concerns. In the meantime, impacted employees will need to seek new opportunities as CVS Health pushes forward with its cost-reduction strategy.
