Cisco Systems is cutting more than 840 jobs across the Bay Area as part of its massive layoff round, according to new WARN filings with the state of California. The layoffs, first announced in August, come despite the San Jose-based tech giant reporting a $10.3 billion annual profit.

The WARN documents, filed on September 13, reveal that 563 employees in San Jose, 145 in Milpitas, and 134 in San Francisco will lose their jobs. Among those affected are 17 vice presidents, five senior vice presidents, and numerous directors, managers, analysts, and engineers.

The layoffs will take effect on November 15, with impacted employees notified on September 16—one month after Cisco initially disclosed its layoff plans on August 14.

Cisco previously stated that it is eliminating 7% of its workforce to focus on “key growth opportunities and drive more efficiency.” Cisco spokesperson Robyn Blum said the move aligns with Cisco’s strategic investments in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

The scale of the layoffs raises questions about the company’s long-term strategy despite its strong financial performance. With nearly 1,000 Bay Area employees affected, the local tech job market faces further strain as workers seek new opportunities in an increasingly competitive industry.
